Take Your Chances.

on February 16, 2012

On February 13th 2012 Tom Holloway,a 57-year-old gentleman from Niceville,Florida had an unfortunate accident with his modified ecigarette. It caused damage to his teeth, tongue and caused burns on his face. The accident also caused damage to his home.

Lets put this in perspective.I am in no way making light of this accident or the pain Mr.Holloway has suffered,It was an unfortunate accident. Do not put down your electronic cigarette because of this. We don’t have all the facts yet. It could have been caused by poor craftsmanship of the modified ecig, improper use,or the use of unprotected batteries. There are several different things that could have caused this to happen. Learn from this that you must do your homework before venturing into modified ecigs. Learn about proper battery use and care. Learn about venting and ways to improve the safety of modified ecigs.

Lets look at injuries and deaths caused each year by tobacco cigarettes.

Lung Cancer-The leading cause of death in the U.S. Estimates for 2012.

New cases-226,160  Male-116,470  Female-109,690

Deaths-160,340  Male-87,750  Female-72,590

Lung cancer is the most preventable form of cancer death in our society.Besides lung cancer tobacco also increases cancers of the mouth, lips, nasal cavity, sinuses, larynx, esophagus, stomach, pancreas, kidney, bladder, uterus, cervix, colon, ovary, and acute myeloid leukemia.

Tobacco use is responsible for 1 in 5 deaths.Nearly 443,000 early deaths each year world-wide.

Tobacco cigarettes are also the leading cause of death from fires and the 2nd leading cause of fire related injuries.According to the American Burn Association about 900 people in the U.S. die each year in fires started by tobacco cigarettes, and about 2,500 are injured.About 100 of the deaths each year are children and non smokers.Nationally annual human and property costs by careless smoking are about $6 billion.

I believe I would rather take my chances with ecigs and take the time to learn proper use and care of my devices than to use tobacco cigarettes. The numbers show us that the risks are much higher with tobacco products. There are risks involved in everything we do. The idea is to lower your risks and try to be as safe as possible. Almost anything can be dangerous in the hands of an uninformed person. I believe ecigs are a successful safer alternative to tobacco cigarettes when used properly. I will continue to use them and recommend them as a safer alternative to smoking.
